Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has vowed to continue speaking out on the Kware femicide case after being suspended from the National Assembly for 20 days.

Wamuchomba was barred from Parliament by Speaker Moses Wetangula on Wednesday, a day after she protested against Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over what she said was his failure to ensure the arrest of the prime suspect in the killings of 42 women whose bodies were found at Kware Dumpsite in July 2024.

Addressing the matter after her suspension, Wamuchomba said the move would not deter her from demanding accountability from state agencies.

“This punitive action is a move to silence both myself and the broader anti-femicide movement, which continues to demand accountability from security agencies for failing to protect Kenyan women and girls,” she said.

Murkomen, in a parliamentary response to her earlier probe, told MPs that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had positively identified only five of the 42 bodies more than a year after the discovery.

He added that there had been no progress in locating prime suspect Collin Jumaisi or other suspects since Jumaisi escaped from police custody on August 20, 2024.

Official records indicate that since 2016, over 930 women have been killed in Kenya, with only 216 perpetrators prosecuted. Wamuchomba said Murkomen’s handling of the Kware case showed contempt for the victims and entrenched impunity.

She also faulted Murkomen for dismissing a BBC Africa Eye documentary on child sex trade as an “attack on Kenya’s image,” saying it reflected a reluctance to address systemic threats to women and girls.
