President William Ruto will preside the handover of 1,080 keys to beneficiaries of the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project in Embakasi South, Nairobi on Tuesday the 20th of May 2025.
Speaking to the press, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the initiative marks the single largest affordable housing delivery in Kenya’s history, setting a precedent for dignified living through the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
“For thousands of former residents of informal settlements in Mukuru, this project is a new beginning as the new units offer safe, modern, and dignified living conditions.
The housing model allows residents to transition from tenants to homeowners through a flexible rent-to-own plan. For as little as KSh 3,494 per month, a beneficiary will begin paying for a studio apartment valued at KSh 640,000. This model is not only inclusive but also practical, designed to ease the financial burden for low-income earners while promoting responsible homeownership,” he added
The Mukuru Affordable Housing Estate includes:
- 26 blocks comprising 5,616 bed-sitters
- 14 blocks offering 3,024 one-bedroom apartments
- 48 blocks with 4,608 two-bedroom units
“Over 160,000 jobs have been generated directly and indirectly through construction, logistics, and support services. The project has empowered local artisans, contractors, suppliers, and youth, injecting vitality into Kenya’s economy,” he said.
Mwaura noted that the housing initiative has been a collaborative effort between government agencies, county authorities, financial institutions, and community-based organizations, all playing critical roles in planning, vetting, and execution.
“A total of 970 out of the 1,080 households set to receive keys have already been verified, ensuring the integrity and fairness of the allocation process,” he added.
