Kenya has today joined the rest of the world in marking World Contraception Day (WCD) 2025, held under the theme “A Choice for All – Agency, Intention, Access.”

The national celebrations held in Makueni County, brought together government officials, development partners, healthcare providers and communities to highlight the critical importance of family planning in advancing health, empowerment and socio-economic development.

Dr. Walter Obita, Country Director of Marie Stopes Kenya, emphasized the importance of ensuring that every woman and every family has the freedom and means to choose their future.

“This day is a reminder that every woman and every family deserves the power to decide freely about their future,” he said.

He called for stronger collaborations, increased investment and community awareness to make reproductive choice a reality for every Kenyan.

This comes after the National Update on Family Planning Program in Kenya, released by the Ministry of Health’s Division of Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (DRMNCAH), highlighted that 30 per cent of women want to delay their next pregnancy, while 76 per cent need contraception.

The update also showed that a majority of women, at least 6 out of 10, are using a form of contraception with injectables leading the pack followed by implants, pill and IUD, in that order, for modern contraception methods.

Further it shed light on how Kenyan women are increasingly taking charge of their reproductive health, with 46 per cent of women of reproductive age saying they do not want more children.

The findings of the update align with the goals of World Contraception Day 2025, which seek to raise awareness on the availability and use of contraceptives.
