Governors Suspend Appearances Before Senate Audit Committee

Governors will stop appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee until concerns over what they call harassment and intimidation are addressed.

In a statement signed by Ahmed Abdullahi, the Governor of Wajir County and Chairman of the Council of Governors, the governors said they will not attend sessions of the committee until there is structured engagement between the Senate leadership and the Council to resolve the dispute.

The Council said it was concerned about what it described as extortion, political witch hunts, and humiliation of governors when they appear before the committee. It argued that oversight must be conducted within the law and without abuse of office.

Governors also raised concerns over repeated summons by the Senate County Public Investment Committee to discuss investment matters involving counties, municipalities, and hospitals. They resolved that going forward, governors will only appear once per audit cycle before the committee.

The resolutions were reached during a governors’ retreat held on February 9, 2026. The meeting focused on repositioning the Council to respond to the political climate while strengthening service delivery across counties.

The governors said they also discussed safeguarding devolution, improving engagement with Senate committees, and addressing challenges in the health sector.

They further expressed concern over the worsening drought situation, especially in arid and semi-arid counties, and called on the national government and development partners to step up efforts to prevent loss of lives and livestock.
