Court Denies Bail to Police Officer Klinzy Baraza in CBD Shooting Case

The High Court has declined to release police officer Klinzy Baraza on bail in a case linked to the fatal shooting of Boniface Kariuki in Nairobi’s central business district.

In its ruling, the court said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unique and had already drawn wide public attention. The judge noted that the matter had entered the public domain in a way that heightened public interest and concern.

The court also took into account reports that the deceased’s family had faced harassment, including repeated unsolicited phone calls and messages. It said this raised concerns about possible interference and intimidation as the case moves forward.

Baraza is accused of shooting Kariuki on June 17, 2025, outside Imenti House in Nairobi CBD. Kariuki, who was selling face masks at the time, was shot in the head. He later died while undergoing treatment.

In denying bail, the court said the accused, as a serving law enforcement officer, holds authority that could potentially be used to interfere with witnesses or disrupt investigations. It found that the prosecution had presented compelling reasons to justify continued detention.

While the officer told the court he would comply with all conditions and cited family responsibilities, the judge ruled that those factors did not outweigh the risks identified.

The court directed that the trial be expedited. The matter will be mentioned before the registry on February 17, 2026. Baraza will remain in custody as proceedings continue.
