The Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), has announced the 31st International Convention, scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 1, 2024 at the PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort and Spa in Mombasa, themed “Industrialization for Economic Transformation and Employment Creation.”
Speaking at the launch of the upcoming International Convention,Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, has emphasized the significant role of engineers in Kenya’s development trajectory, noting that innovation and technology are at the heart of the nation’s economic transformation.
“Engineers are the true catalysts for development. From water infrastructure to large-scale industrial projects, engineering enables progress. Innovation is not just an option, it is a necessity in our fast-changing world,” said Eng. Mugaa.
“Collaboration and partnerships are key to achieving our shared goals. The government cannot do it alone. We need strong partnerships with engineering bodies like the IEK, EBK and ACEK, as well as with private sector players. Public-private partnerships have proven to be an effective way to deliver large- scale infrastructure projects, and I encourage more collaboration in this space,” added Eng. Mugaa.
Eng. Shammah Kiteme, President of IEK, reiterated sentiments by the Cabinet Secretary that Industrialization is the engine that will drive Kenya’s economic transformation and create employment for millions.
He further mentioned that engineers are central to this agenda, and this convention offers an opportunity to chart a path forward, ensuring that our country’s industries grow sustainably and efficiently.
Eng. Erastus K. Mwongera, Chairman of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), reaffirmed EBK’s commitment to safety and capacity building through initiatives such as the Graduate Engineers Internship Program (GEIP), which has successfully transitioned over 700 graduate engineers into professional practice.
Eng. Mwongera called upon local industries to embrace new technologies to remain competitive both regionally and internationally.
This year’s convention is expected to attract over 3,000 delegates, both in-person and virtual, serving as a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and showcasing innovations that will shape the future of Kenya’s industrial landscape.
The convention will seek to bring together leading engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders from Kenya and beyond to explore how industrialization can fuel Kenya’s economic growth, generate employment, and position the nation at the forefront of Africa’s industrial landscape.
