Self-Defense Training Empowers Women Against GBV

Polycom Girls, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Kenya, marked International Women’s Day by advocating for self-defense training as a vital tool in combating gender-based violence (GBV). The initiative focuses on equipping women and girls with Taekwondo skills to enhance their safety and confidence.

Jane Anyango, founder of Polycom Girls, emphasized that self-defence empowers young women to take control of their security. “By equipping women and girls with self-defence skills, we empower them to be agents of change in their communities,” she stated.

The urgency of such initiatives is underscored by Kenya’s rising GBV and femicide cases. Data from Africa Data Hub reveals that at least 500 women were murdered by their intimate partners between January 2016 and December 2023. The crisis escalated between September and November 2024, when authorities recorded 97 femicide cases.

Taekwondo trainer Master Benson Voiya highlighted the growing need for self-defence education. “The need for self-defence knowledge has never been more critical. Women and girls now recognize its importance in protecting themselves,” he noted.

Taekwondo, a martial art that emphasizes discipline and strength, offers both physical protection and psychological empowerment. Trainer Caroline Ambani explained that techniques such as blocking, striking, and escaping holds enable participants to react swiftly in dangerous situations.

Carolyne Murgor, UNFPA Kenya’s Gender Advisor, stressed that self-defence training fosters resilience and independence. “By equipping girls with these skills, we are building a culture where they can stand strong against GBV,” she said.

Daniel Ochieng, a tutor in the Taekwondo program, called for schools to integrate such classes into their curriculum, citing the multiple risks young girls face. He also emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against femicide and GBV
