Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has provided an update on the arrest of former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya. Sifuna alleged that Oparanya was arrested over the vehicle he was using during the Azimio anti-government protests on Wednesday.

Sifuna claimed that the police are claiming the car belongs to the Kakamega County government, but that they have nothing on Oparanya himself.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition had earlier announced that the former county boss had been arrested.  Eugene Wamalwa, a leader in Azimio,  called for the immediate and unconditional release of Oparanya, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, and all protestors who were arrested on Wednesday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki had earlier announced that the government had mobilized security agencies to conduct investigations and carry out arrests on all those who were involved in the anti-government protests.

However, Oparanya has since been released, and in a press statement, he confirmed that he was questioned about the protests.
