Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has launched a citywide clean-up exercise at the Westlands Market, marking the beginning of a broader effort to improve cleanliness and hygiene under the Green Nairobi agenda.
The move, which encourages community participation, will be carried out in phases, targeting different estates and key locations across the city. Sakaja announced plans to install dustbins in the Central Business District (CBD) and residential areas to sustain the effort.
“Very soon, we will begin installing bins in the CBD and other areas. This initiative goes hand in hand with the ongoing clean-up, and we urge all Nairobians to embrace a clean city as a shared responsibility,” Sakaja stated.
The initial clean-up efforts will focus on Westlands, Mountain View Ward, Wangapala Road, Karura Ward (6th Parklands and Limuru Road), Kitisuru Ward (Ngao Road and Deep Sea Area), and Kangemi Ward (Mtama Road and Iregi). Other areas include Landhies Road (Wakulima Market), City Stadium Roundabout to Enterprise Road Roundabout, Enterprise Road, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Lusaka Road.
Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri emphasized the involvement of local communities, county officials, and volunteers in maintaining cleanliness. She added that the installation of bins would help curb littering.
3500 Green Army personnel are set to be employed under the newly established Nairobi Green Company, which will manage environmental sustainability efforts independently.
