Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled 24 new refuse compactor trucks at City Hall in a bid to improve waste management throughout the city. The newly acquired trucks will be deployed immediately to strengthen garbage collection in the Central Business District (CBD), main roads, and key market areas.
“These trucks are crucial for efficient garbage collection across Nairobi. Their deployment begins today, and the work starts now,” Governor Sakaja declared during the launch.
Addressing the waste management team, Sakaja emphasized the importance of utilizing the trucks to meet the growing demand for a cleaner city.
“Our residents expect reliable service delivery, and we cannot afford to let them down. Let’s use these resources effectively to ensure Nairobi is clean and healthy,” he said.
Accompanied by Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri and Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, Sakaja reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Nairobi into one of the cleanest cities in Africa.
“Two days ago, over 3,500 members of the Green Army participated in cleanup activities across the county. Cleanliness is essential to our growth. We must ensure that our streets, markets, and neighborhoods are spotless. This is our shared responsibility,” he urged.
Sakaja also announced plans to establish the Green Nairobi Company Limited, a specialized parastatal tasked with maintaining cleanliness in the city. Modeled after Nairobi Water, the new entity will operate independently to ensure consistent funding and efficient waste management operations.
“This company will bring efficiency and accountability to how we manage waste. Garbage collectors will remain involved but will work under a structured system designed to improve effectiveness,” he explained.
