Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that the county has broken its own-source revenue record, collecting Sh12.8 billion in the 2023/24 financial year. This represents a significant increase from the previous year’s Sh10.6 billion.
Sakaja attributed the performance to the county’s efforts at digitization and reduction of wastage in the revenue collection system. ”
“When you have a no cash policy and everything comes directly into our system, to our banks and the county revenue fund, then you find that a lot of wastage and pilferage is reduced,” he explained.
However, the governor noted that the county’s revenue target of Sh13 billion could have been achieved were it not for the recent protests that “paralyzed activities in the City.” He revealed that there were days when the county’s daily collection dipped as low as Sh10 million, a far cry from the usual Sh85 million per day.
Sakaja has also endorsed a peace concert organized by activist Boniface Mwangi at Uhuru Park. The concert aims to honor victims of recent anti-government protests.
“We wanted to have a concert on Saturday. They should allow us to use Uhuru Park for the concert to honor those the government murdered. Sakaja, can we get access to Uhuru Park on Saturday as is? Who do we speak to?” Boniface Mwangi asked on his X official handle.
