President William Ruto has said the national government will work with Nairobi County to improve roads and street sanitation in the capital.

Speaking at Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, Ruto said the condition of roads and waste management in Nairobi needed immediate attention.

He said the two levels of government will focus on completing link roads and building walkways. He also noted an agreement had been reached on a joint effort to clean up the city.

The announcement followed criticism from Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, who blamed Nairobi County for failing to provide basic services. Atwoli urged Ruto to intervene, saying the situation had worsened and was affecting the image of the country.

Atwoli said visitors arriving in the city are met by crowded streets and poor public order, which reflect poorly on Nairobi.

President Ruto also said the government would continue with the Affordable Housing Programme to improve living conditions in towns and cities. He added that school expansion is underway in densely populated and underserved areas to allow more learners into classrooms.
