President William Ruto has confirmed that Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame will attend Wednesday’s East African Community (EAC) emergency summit to address the escalating crisis in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Speaking at State House during a press briefing on African Union reforms, President Ruto underscored the urgency of the summit, revealing that several other heads of state had also confirmed their participation.
“We are all in agreement that now more than ever, it is an existential issue not just for the people of Eastern DRC but for this region. The situation in Eastern DRC now demands our collective focus,” he said.
The summit comes amid worsening tensions and violence in the region, where armed groups have caused widespread displacement and humanitarian crises. The conflict, which has persisted for decades, continues to disrupt the lives of Congolese citizens and destabilize the broader East African region.
President Ruto highlighted Kenya’s unwavering commitment to peace-building efforts, emphasizing that regional stability and economic growth hinge on resolving the conflict in Eastern DRC.
“We must all work together to end this cycle of conflict that has plagued our brothers and sisters in Eastern DRC. This is a matter of regional and continental importance,” he said.
The emergency summit will focus on actionable steps, including dialogue, security interventions, and humanitarian support, aimed at restoring peace in Eastern DRC
