Nairobi is poised to make a significant leap in sustainable energy production with the upcoming construction of Kenya’s first Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant in Dandora. Governor Johnson Sakaja announced the project following a meeting with Wu Guisheng, President of China National Electric Engineering Co. (CNEEC), at City Hall.
The initiative, valued at KSh 50 billion, is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) awarded to CNEEC. Once completed, the plant is expected to generate 45 megawatts (MW) of electricity from solid waste, addressing the county’s waste management and energy production challenges.
“The Dandora Waste-to-Energy plant will not only reduce the environmental impact of waste but also contribute significantly to our city’s energy needs,” Governor Sakaja stated.
The initiative aligns with Nairobi’s broader environmental goals. It aims to tackle the persistent issue of solid waste management while providing a cleaner, renewable energy source.
