Murkomen Warns of Legal Action Against Youths Misusing Social Media

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a warning against young people misusing social media and threatened legal action against those involved.

While accompanying President William Ruto on a development tour in Uasin Gishu, Murkomen emphasized that social media should not be used to intimidate.

“I pose this question to parents, church leaders defending such misconduct, and politicians opposing us: if your child is at school and another student shares an image of them in a coffin, wouldn’t you see that as a direct threat? Essentially, it’s a way of saying, ‘I’ll harm you,'” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary pledged that his ministry would prosecute individuals using social media to issue threats.

“If we fail to act, we risk losing our nation. We are determined to restore order in our country,” he asserted.

He called on religious leaders and politicians to support the President’s efforts to maintain national stability.

Murkomen’s remarks came as President Ruto condemned the circulation of social media posts depicting senior government officials in coffins.

The President accused certain political figures of funding young people to smear government officials through such content.

Ruto warned of the grave consequences of such actions, stating that they encouraged a culture of violence and devalued human life.

Recently, the President has faced criticism from opponents of his administration, some of whom have shared satirical images, including depictions of his death, as a form of protest.

He expressed concern that these creators were being paid by government critics to propagate negative campaigns.

“I urge the youth not to accept small amounts of money to produce images portraying government officials in coffins,” Ruto cautioned.
