KRA Probes Activist Morara Kebaso Over Alleged Tax Evasion

Published

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is investigating political activist Morara Kebaso for allegedly failing to file tax returns on Ksh.186 million in income generated by five of his businesses since 2022.

The businesses under scrutiny include Backtent Security Limited, Morara Properties Limited (Blacksmith Morara Limited), Luku Fashion, Morara Home Furniture, and Igrow Digital Enterprise.

A notice issued by the KRA indicated that these companies have either reported no income or failed to submit tax returns despite Morara owning properties, business ventures, and other assets. The tax authority also flagged significant money transfers to Morara’s personal account and the accounts of Morara Properties Limited and Morara Home Furniture.

The KRA revealed that funds deposited into Morara’s personal account were primarily received via M-Pesa, allegedly to cover furniture and interior fittings expenses. Additionally, Morara Properties and Morara Home Furniture payments were made through M-Pesa Paybill transactions.

The investigation is ongoing as the KRA seeks to establish the full extent of the alleged tax evasion.
