Kibra Residents Protest Funded Incomplete Woodley Stadium

Residents of Kibera and football stakeholders held protests at Woodley Stadium, seeking answers about its neglect despite allocated funds for its upgrade. They entered the stadium hoping for explanations but found police officers increasing security measures.

The protesters questioned why the stadium’s upgrade was progressing so slowly, noting that various regimes and stakeholders had allocated funds for the project. They demanded to know the reasons for the delays and the expected completion date.

Disappointment grew as residents observed the current state of the stadium, which was overgrown with tall shrubs, scattered bushes, and decomposing, rusting construction materials.

What began as a peaceful occupation escalated into a protest, with clashes between police and residents. Police used teargas to disperse the crowd, leading to chaos and vandalism. Angry residents breached restricted areas and took construction materials such as logs and iron sheets.

The use of teargas also disrupted education in nearby areas and hampered business activities, with shops closing and business owners guarding their premises against potential vandalism and theft.
