The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has strongly criticized Pastor James Ng’ang’a for his recent comments that trivialized rape and demeaned women.

In a statement released on Monday, January 20, KEWOPA labeled Ng’ang’a’s remarks as deeply harmful, particularly amidst a surge in gender-based violence (GBV) cases across Kenya.

“As a society, we must uphold the dignity and respect of all individuals, especially during this time when GBV is on the rise. Such statements are not only harmful and insensitive but also undermine the ongoing fight against GBV and its devastating impact on survivors and their families,” said KEWOPA Chairperson Leah Sankaire in the statement.

The association underscored the gravity of rape as a crime, highlighting the severe and lasting trauma it inflicts on survivors.

“Rape is not a subject for jest or mockery. It is a heinous crime with lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical consequences for survivors. Reckless and insensitive statements like these diminish the pain of survivors and perpetuate harmful stereotypes that normalize GBV within our communities,” the statement continued.

KEWOPA called on leaders, particularly those in religious circles, to adopt a zero-tolerance stance against violence and discrimination and to use their platforms to promote compassion and understanding.

“At a time when Kenya is grappling with rising cases of GBV, leaders, including those in religious spaces, must lead the charge in fostering empathy and advocating for a society free of violence. Words hold power, and public figures have a responsibility to educate, empower, and inspire positive societal change rather than inflict harm or belittle others,” the statement noted.

The association further emphasized the influential role of faith-based institutions in shaping societal values.

“Religious leaders play a critical role in molding attitudes and behaviors. It is imperative that they set an example by championing messages of love, respect, and the protection of all, especially the vulnerable. These actions strengthen the moral fabric of our communities and address the root causes of GBV,” KEWOPA added.

KEWOPA has called on Pastor Ng’ang’a to issue an unreserved apology to survivors of sexual violence and to women across Kenya.

“KEWOPA demands that Pastor Ng’ang’a issue a sincere apology to survivors of sexual violence and all Kenyan women. Furthermore, we urge all leaders, organizations, and communities to remain steadfast in combating GBV by raising awareness, supporting survivors, and ensuring perpetrators face justice,” the statement concluded.

Pastor Ng’ang’a, known for his controversial behavior, made the remarks during a church service at his Neno Evangelism Center on Sunday, sparking widespread condemnation.
