KCSE: Rise in E Grades Raises Alarm

Published

on

The number of students receiving the dreaded E grade in national exams has risen by 72% over the past five years, signaling a concerning trend in the education system. This alarming increase is projected to continue, highlighting the growing challenges in academic performance.

An E grade often brings societal stigma, with many students feeling ashamed of their results. This fear of judgment can lead them to avoid discussing their educational backgrounds publicly, while the thought of explaining their grades to their parents becomes overwhelming.

For many, an E grade means being treated as an outcast, adding to the pressure faced by students who have spent years in school only to be seen as failures by their communities. This worrying rise in the number of students scoring E’s raises questions about the effectiveness of the current education system and its ability to support all students equally.

This new development comes even as learners were unable to effectively access their results after they were released on Thursday afternoon as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website went down.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the results at about noon and said they could be publicly accessible afterward.
