The Inspector General (IG) of police Hillary Mutyambai has once again averred that promotion within the police service will be based on ‘one’s performance.’

Speaking on Twitter on the #EngageTheIG session on Monday, 7th June 2021, Mutyambai said the matter is a continuous process and there should be no cause for alarm.

“This is a work in progress, we continue to promote officers based on merit, training attended, qualifications, and several other grounds, currently we have contingents of officers in various cadres in different NPS campuses undergoing promotion courses,” Mutyambai said.

He was responding to a question asked by a user named Afrikaa King on when the IG would oversee the aforementioned.
In previous days, there has been growing concern over promotions within the police service. Police officers with undergraduate degrees have been raising queries on the salary they are receiving despite their qualifications.
In March this year, outgoing Police spokesperson Charles Owino, speaking on a local TV station, alluded those police officers with lower grades perform better in the service as compared to those with Diplomas, Degrees, and Masters.
“For every nine police officers, we may only have one corporal and one inspector. You cannot promote everyone to those levels.” Owino said.
