A fire broke out at Moi Girls’ High School in Nairobi on Monday, January 20, prompting the evacuation of all students. Fire engines on-site managed to contain the blaze, and no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In response, the Kenya Red Cross provided relief supplies, including 200 mattresses, 400 blankets, and 200 dignity kits for the affected students.
“Our counseling team will be offering Psychosocial Support Services to the affected,” the organization stated.
This marks the second fire incident at the school in recent years. On September 2, 2017, a devastating fire in the Kabarnet dormitory claimed the lives of 10 students and injured several others.
Subsequent investigations revealed that a 14-year-old Form One student deliberately started the fire, intending to cause a disturbance that would lead to her transfer from the school. In December 2021, the High Court convicted her of manslaughter, sentencing her to five years in prison, citing her reckless actions that resulted in the loss of lives.
