The body of Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, a Kenyan police officer killed in Haiti, arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday, March 10, after logistical delays. The officer, who was part of Kenya’s peacekeeping mission in Haiti, was shot in the head during a clash with a gang in Port-au-Prince on February 23.
Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, led a team of senior officers in receiving the body. A sombre mood engulfed the airport as family members and colleagues paid their respects. The body was later moved to Chiromo Mortuary, pending burial arrangements.
Kenya has deployed at least 800 officers under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to combat escalating gang violence in Haiti. The government has assured that the well-being of deployed officers remains a priority, with continuous communication and support.
Kaetuai’s remains arrive after days of logistical challenges, with authorities coordinating transportation through the Dominican Republic and the United States.
Last week, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and other senior officers visited Kaetuai’s family in Kajiado East Sub-County to offer condolences. Kanja described him as a hero who died in the line of duty while defending global peace.
Haiti has been facing a surge in gang violence, with the United Nations reporting that over 5,500 people were killed in 2024. The violence has displaced more than a million people, leading to a breakdown of law and order and a humanitarian crisis.
Officials, including Senator Peris Tobiko, State House Controller Dr. Katoo Ole Metito, and NPSC Commissioner John Ole Moyaki, were also present at the ceremony. The government has pledged unwavering support to the officer’s family during this difficult period.
