Kenya Faces Rising Gender-Based Violence Cases

Published

on

Kenya recorded over 7,100 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) since September 2023, with statistics highlighting the extent of the crisis, including 100 murders of women documented between August and November 2024.

A 2024 security report paints a picture of rising violence against women and girls, sparking calls for action. Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi expressed concern, revealing that most cases are under investigation, with Nairobi County reporting the highest incidents.

Victims like Mary, a 34-year-old woman from rural Kenya, bring these statistics to life. Married at 20, Mary endured years of escalating abuse from her husband, including physical violence in front of her children. Cultural expectations and fear of losing her children trapped her in the marriage until a severe beating led her to seek help from a local women’s rights organization.

The group provided Mary with a safe space, legal assistance, and support to report her abuse. Stories like hers underscore the need for more resources and societal change to combat GBV.

Reports indicate that over 40% of Kenyan women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence, and 14% have suffered sexual violence. Human rights defender Njoki Gachanja believes the real figures may be higher due to underreporting in low-income areas where poverty exacerbates abuse.
